Can a co-signer to an auto loan be added after the loan has been made?

No. A loan is a contract between two parties, and is valid for whatever term is written into the contract. No part of a contract can be changed, if it changes the essence of the contract. Changing the liability of involved parties would indeed be critical to the essence of the contract.
