What makes a spaceship in space move?

the rocket's pushing gas or whatever it uses out, which propels it forward. when the astronaut throws his shoe, he moves back with the same force as the shoe. this happens on earth too, but because of the friction between his feet and the ground, he stays put, while the shoe in the air moves.
