Why did this happen?

in the movie Top Gun, Maverick's plane went into a black spin. He couldn't reach the ejection handle, so his co-pilot did. They were flying an F-14 Tomcat. Well, the copiltot pulled it, and he smashed his head on the canopy. Why??
